Hey all

Well, I have somewhat mastered Silent Night which I believe was a lesson by David Hodge. Took me a month or so but I sound pretty darn good at it. I only used the lesson as a basis and flew with it. Kind of a finger picking thing and it was the most exciting thing I have learned so far on guitar.

But now I have been looking for other Christmas songs that I could learn. I have found alot of them with weird tunings and alot of them that are strumming song. But I would like to know if anyone can point me to some that are in standard tuning and preferably fingerpicked. I like the "harpy" sound the guitar makes with Christmas songs that are fingerpicked. Does that make sense?

Thanks in advance

Geoo

Simple bit of google work here. The second link is one of those sites pulled up with the first link. I know what you mean about that feeling good when getting a christmas song and being able to puzzle it out. Lots of fun.

There's a book by Mark Hanson. His basic fingerstyle books are very good. I have not mastered them, and I don't know the level of the christmas song book. I vaguely remember reading a review that it is quite advanced, and that you should master the two basic books before trying it, but my memory could be misleading me.

Hi Geoo,

My next two lessons, both which should be out in December, will be Christmas songs fingerpicked in standard tuning. "Infant Holy, Infant Lowly" (a little easier than the version I showed you, I hope) should be up in the next week or two, and I should have "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear" up around Christmas. Stay tuned...

Silver Bells is a nice one to finger pick, fairly simple progression in C

Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.

Went to your site and downloaded the two free mp3's. Listening to I Will Bow and Be Simple right now. Excellent stuff. I love celtic music and will look forward to going through your arrangement of The King of Love Shepard Is as soon as I get my teacher to show me how to tune to DADGAD. Looks like another simple Guitar Noise lesson to help us new guys find our way. Thanks kindly.

Thanks - that's a really good suggestion. The reaon I haven't used a classical guitar is that I don't own one at the moment, though I've studied classical in the past (and I still play classical on my steel string). I'll see what next year brings :)

You're quite welcome, Gadlaw. DADGAD is a lot of fun. My next few lessons will be in standard tuning...I used standard for those two mp3s - glad you enjoyed them!

I have Mark Hanson's Christmas book, but haven't looked at it for a year or so. I thought it was an excellent book and I played his arrangement of "Silent Night" at a church service a few years ago.

Doug, I am looking forward to your next lessons. You are another reason that my fingerpicking has gotten so much better. I actually prefer it over strumming now. But alt tunings are always such a hassle for me. LOL Maybe its laziness. Not sure.

Thanks again

Geoo, that's great to hear. I've always prefered fingerpicking myself, but once I discovered open and altered tunings (DADGAD in particular), I pretty much spent all my guitar time working on that. But recently I've come back to playing standard most of the time, everything from classical to flatpicking...probably the next few lessons for next year will be flatpicking in standard tuning, most likely a few celtic tunes (maybe guitar and mandolin???). But there will definitely be more fingerpicking...
