Just found this site, looks like an awesome group. Pretty much a newbie but working hard. I have a quick question if someone could help....

I am trying to learn some songs from the bands I like and the lightbulb just went on that many rock bands rely heavily on power chords. In fact, most of the stuff from the 60's-70's and 80's is all just powerchords, or so it seems. In comes the Rolling Stones. Back when I first started playing guitar (on an accoustic) I tried to play some stones with open position chords and the changes just broke my finders. Now I realize that the rolling stones may rely heavily on power chords (I mean, HEY, its Keith Richards for godsakes). They do lots of fast changes with further leads to this assertion. However...

When going to various TAB sets there is often mention of E7's, Em's etc. Would they be playing open chords for those particular chords or are these guys just blazing fast at playing open chords/barre chords (since there are no 7ths or minors for power chords, right?).

Here is an example of what I mean:

E E7 A A7 E E7 A A7
I can't get no satisfaction, I can't get no satisfaction
E B7 E A
'Cause I try, and I try, and I try, and I try,
E D A E D
I can't get no....I can't get no...

A little hacked, but you get the drift. It seems all of thier songs have a million changes and I am struggling to make the changes fast and clean enough to keep up. But if they are just playing power chords, it would make this stuff cake.

I realize this particular song could also just be a blues progression in E but there are many other examples of stones tunes that don't fit that format but have many fast changes.

Any help would be appreciated.

All he's doing in that song is lifting one finger out of each chord to make it a 7th

Ah ha! Gotcha. See I knew there was a simple solution.

My limited background in guitar (been playing about a year now) is all with the accoustic and they guy teaching me always takes a complicated approach to things. I am just now learning that most of this stuff was written by 19 year olds with limited musical experience who used distortion and easy tricks to get great sound.

Thanks for the input. Can I hit you up with other stones examples to see if there are other tricks I could learn? Love the stones.

You have to realize alot of Stones tunes are played in open tunings. Keith loves using Open G and to a lesser extent Open E.
Since you chose Satisfaction Let me illustrate
Song: (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
Artist: The Rolling Stones
Album: Out of Our Heads and ALL their Greatest Hits Collections.
A-|-2--2----2--4--5----5--4--| REPEAT 4x then play the first note:-2-and end Riff until the verse.

CHORUS:
E A E A
I can't get no satisfaction I can't get no satisfaction (Improvise Until Riff)
---------------------------------------------------------
E B7 E A
Cause I try__ and I try___ and I try__ and try__
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A E A D A E A D
I can't get no I can't get no
You have two guitars, one playing the riff and one playing the chord structure. So lets assume you were to tune to Open E to play this. YOu have 4 chords to play, E, A,D and B7. Now to get that "Stones" sound Keith slides between chords to get the slurring sound. SO you start out on E so you play all strings open with slight palm mute, to go to the A you barre across the 3rd fret and slide down to the 5th. For the D you just slide from the 5th to the 10th fret and then back up to the 5th for the following A. For the B7 you barre across the 7th fret and finger the 5th string on the 9th fret. For a more interesting "Stones" type sound you could barre at the 7th and finger the 3rd sting 8th fret and the 5th string 9th fret.
I hope I explained that clearly
Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.
nice post teleplayer.
Ive always played Satisfaction in standard tuning. no one complained.
also, beside Keith being in open G very often he also has removerd the low sixth string from his tele.
he said he nevr used it much and it got in the way.
Hi all when I play satisfaction I use my shubb capo on the second fret leaving the low E open so its like a dropped D. I can then get the bass and rythm sort of like this
Satisfaction
e: |----2----2------------3---3---3---3--|
b: |----3----3------------3---3---3---3--|
g: |----2----2------------0---0---0---0--|
d: |----0----0------------2---2---2---0--|
a: |----0----0----0---2--3---3---3---2--|
E: |----0----0-----------------------------| 5 times
D D G G
D D G G
D A7 D G
e: |----2----2------------3---3---3---3-|
b: |----3----3------------3---3---3---3-|
g: |----2----2------------0---0---0---0-|
d: |----0----0------------2---2---2---0-|
a: |----0----0----0--2---3---3---3---2-|
E: |----0----0----------------------------|
Strumming is D D U D U
Richards does do some power chords from time to time. 'Flip The Switch" is a good example if I remember correctly.
Hello all
I play a chord version of Satisfaction with the d/du/u/du pattern, with the following chord changes:
CHORUS:
E (2 measures) A (2measures)
I can't get no satisfaction
E (2) A (2)
I can't get no satisfaction
E (1) (1) E (1) A (1)
'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
E (2) D (1) A (1)
I can't get no
E (2) D (1) A (1)
I can't get no
E (2) D (1) A (1)
When I'm drivin' in my car
E (2) D (1) A (1)
And that man comes on the radio
E (2) D (1) A (2)
He's tellin' me more and more
E (2) D (1) A (1)
About some useless information
E (2) D (1) A (1)
Supposed to fire my imagination
E (1) D (1) A (1) E (1)
I can't get no, oh no no no
am I wrong?
Thanks
Matteo
matteo, you're kinda wrong. there need to be the B in there.
the way you have the rythm and chord changes sounds more like Gloria G.L. O.R.I.A.
the chord changes may be ok. hard to tell because of where you have the chord name over the lyric. sometimes the physical nature of typing and spacing goes off.
I tend to keep it simpler.
ie:
E B
I cant get no satisfaction
E
when Im drivin in my car
and the man comes on the radio
I hold the E over it all with another guitar doing the fuzz guitar part.
looking again, I guess you notate that by writing E D A.
remember, Ive been doing it my way for a hundred years.
t goes without saying that I could be wrong.
importantly , what sounds good to your ears is what is correct.
