I would say a pro would be sustain. Easier to restring, setup and tune. I personally like the tone better.

what about staggerd stringing? like some of the Ibanez guitars?

both my Takamine 6 string and 12 string have "thru-bridge" stringing and i think it's a heck of a time saver. added sustain and i believe a more responsive tone are also a plus

I doubt you will notice any difference between a one that is lined up and one that is stagged.

Tone is subjective. I notice that my string through Jackson and my Floyd Rose Strat sound totally different even with the same exact pickups and wiring. The Trem seems to make the guitar very bright and robs some of the bass. All my hard tail guitars are string through so I can't give you a good comparison. I wouldn't think you will find to much a difference in tone between a string though and a metal tail.

I am thinking of getting this done to my Larrivee acoustic. I don't see any drawbacks, other that the few bucks you will shell out to have it done, but It is easy to see how much quicker it will be to change strings.

Little brother has some recordings on his site testing different saddle materials, and in one instance he used a through bridge string installation. I can't hear any difference, and I don't understand why the tone or sustain would change. But that is only one experiment coupled with my limited understanding of the mechanics of vibration in relation to the guitar.

Cheers,

Max

My Crafter has through bridge,
I love the sound but can't say if it is just the guitar itself and what the bridge configuration does to it.
My Dean has pins and it sounds great as well.
If nothing else it does make string changes a piece of cake :D

it sounds like a string thru is something to go for if i have the option.

I've seen staggered stringings that are spread out in a fan shape, and heard they give a better tone and
are easier on the guitar body. dont know
