I just got some tab and there is the symbol for a down stroke, but above it is all X's. What does that mean? Then between some of the same chords there are little tiny ^'s but below there is no symbol for a strum. Any ideas?

I can look back with a smile, knowing that my ambition far exceeded my talent.

An X usually means a muted or unplayed string.

Hiya,

The X is for a muted string - just touch it with your finger and play it.

Best,

An X usually means as previously said; a 'muted' string, one way to do this is to lightly lay one of your left hand fingers onthe string so it doesn't sound, or you can alternitively palm mute the string where you use the base of your palm near to the bridge to mute it.
