Hey everyone...I've recently started teaching some friends how to play...

What should I be starting them off with? So far, I've given one the chromatic scale, and the pentatonic..Just basically having her go 1234 1234 1234, on around the 9th fret or so on each string...

Now the trouble is, is I was pretty much a natural when I first started.I mean I learned the intro to Layla the first day I played... So I don't REALLY know what its like to just start out playing.

Any recomendations for teaching stuff? Should I stop telling them to do what I have, and have them do something else? Thanks much.

So modest... :D j/k

I have helped a few people start out playing. What I would recommend, get them to work on some simple cowboy chords. For fun give them something easy that they know (i.e. like the riff to Smoke On The Water).

Gun control is using both hands!!!

lol, I wasn't trying to brag or anything, starting out without to much trouble doesn't mean im good now ;)

Was that in addition to the stuff I already have her doing, or to replace it. And yeah, simple chords sounds good. And so does the smoke on the water idea.

NoteBoat was kind enough to post this a little while ago.

Scroll down to his post that lists EVERYTHING.

I hope this helps. It's not easy to explain what comes naturally or what you put TONS of hours of work into. So if you feel confident in teaching it...Go for it!

:) I would have to say that smoke on the water is perfect to start somone with, I know I did and it realy makes you feel good when you can play it, Also some simple chords and the Minor Pentatonic scales are good after learning some chords. :D
