Hey all,

I'm thinking about the blues. When playing in 5th postion (between 5th and 8th frets), is this the same as playing in the key of A.

Man I hope that's not too dumb a question.

I assume you are saying that you are playing a blues scale and starting at the 5th position. Since you are starting on the 5th fret- sixth string, the root note is A and therefore the key is A as well.

Yup if you start on the 5th fret of the 1st or 6th string and apply the "BOX" of a minor Pent scale,
5-8
5-8
5-7
5-7
5-7
5-8

you have the Am Pent.. Move it up two frets to the 7th and you have the Bm pent scale etc... up and down the neck.

Same goes for the blues scale. :)

Good question :)

True Sleg,

I was just trying to keep it simple, since he was making the connection to A on the 5th fret.

Don't wanna confuse 'em just yet

I guess it all depends on what scale form or pattern you use.
