ack my tunner Hz setting says 438 i dont remeber what it was suposed to be on isnt it 440hz?

No, the high e string, 5th fret is 440Hz - concert A. The open 5th string (A) is 110Hz. The 3rd string, 2nd fret is 220Hz and the 2nd string, 1st fret is middle C at 261.6Hz.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

What Greybeard says is true. But if your tuner is like most tuners, you want it set at "440," because that's where the tuner will judge the other notes by. More likely than not, you simply hit a button by accident at one point - it happens all the time and some tuners don't automatically reset when you turn them off and on again.

Do you still have the instruction sheet for the tuner around somewhere?

If not, post the make/model. I bet someone else has the same one, and the instructions
