I enjoy playing guitar, it's apart of my life now. I'd really like to start learning the "violin" as well.

Could anyone help me out in the right direction to find information or forums specificly for it?

Or if you can, answer my q's :) ?

1...What would be the best bang for buck in the -$500 price range, including the bow , box and strings...

Should I spend more?

I'd really like a high quality instrument that will last me through my intermediate years.

2...Is it anything like playing guitar? :) I hope so..

There's lots of Violin forums around if you search google.com, I haven't been to any so I really can't say which one would be right for you. You'll have to check a few out and see which one works best for you. It always a good investment to get an instrument of you liking. I haven't played the couple I have in years, (they do look good hanging on the wall though). There's still a few mom and pop music stores around that would carry some fine instruments, perhaps keep an eye out for one.

They tend to be a little more pricey but the service after the sale can more than make up for it.
