Hey all,

I have a standard bridge and trem system on my electric, so when I use the whammy bar, all the strings de-tune. One of these days I'd like to upgrade to a locking trem, but until then, I think I've heard about some kind of string locking mechanism. Am I right? What's is called, how many$?

Thanks for any help.

I think you may be referring to a locking nut. This requires surgery on your guitar, which you may not want to do. To get an approximate cost, I'd take the guitar to a tech and ask for a quote.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

I am suspecting that you mis undersand a whammy bar function.
all the strings detune when pressing down on he whammy.
a locking nut and/ or locking tuners will not stop all the strings detuning.

now I could be wrong on that if I misunderstood your question.

locking tuners and nut will not keep your strings in tune either.
maybe a little better but not perfection.

my strat plus from the 80's has an early floyd rose trem, roller nut, and locking tuners.
the ;locking tuners just make things easier when changing strings.

the roller nut helps the strings move when dive bombing with the whammy bar.
the quality build of my Fender keeps the strings in tune. nothing else.

that just about covers a complete misunderstanding of your post.
or I nailed it.

...Or if you don't mind losing the functionality of your whammy bar, you could just block the tremolo.
I find this to be the best solution for cheap(ish) trem systems that refuse to stay in tune.
NB: No permanent irreversible modifications need to be made.

Or you could get a new nut, String trees and saddles from Graphtech. See them here http://www.graphtech.com/index.php Shuoldn't cost more than $70 USD.
