It could be said that everyone is self-taught. Because even if a teacher shows you something, you take the technique and make it your own.

Speaking as a teacher, that's very true.

But there are a lot of advantages to learning from lessons...

- a teacher tells you when you're doing something wrong. A lot of self-taught guitarists don't realize the errors they're making, or the future consequences of approaching things a certain way.

- a teacher sees when you're just not getting it, and trys a different approach. A book or video will only give it to you from one angle, because it's a static thing... so if you can't get what an author is saying, your ony choice is to buy a different book (and you might not get that approach either)

- a teacher can quickly show you other places you could use a technique

- a teacher is a big motivator, even the ones who might not be personally very motivational. It's true you learn for yourself (even with a teacher), but the simple fact that you're spending money means you'll practice to get ready for the lesson - if only so you're not wasting your money.
