Im in the market for a new amp. And i was wondering what sorts of features i should be looking for. Im not TOO into heavy rock and metal music, I could always invest in a nice distortion pedal later on. I've done a bit of research and Im a unsure of whats good to have or whats just uneeded features in an amp. Im looking for something that would be fine for small gigs in the future, but also good for practicing. My price range runs up to about $200. help me out plz.
some things ive looked at are

I'd look for at least partial tube circuitry (as the valvtronic has I believe), and a good clean sound that you like when you hook up to it with your guitar.
In my view, the telling characteristic of an amp is if you like how it sounds clean.
As you noted you can add effects pedals. And you will.
What you can't do is FIX a clean channel amp that you don't like the clean sound from.
I think this advice is true regardless of if you play thrash metal or accoustic jazz. If the clean sound doesn't thrill you, it's the wrong amp.
Also, when playing clean, if the amp has an eq or (low, mid, high frequency knobs) start out with everything at 0 and raise bass, mids, then highs just until those frequencies start sounding right. If you stasrt out raising the mids and highs you'll not be able to hear if you like the bottom due to some effect who's scientific name I forget :)
