All The Young Dudes – Mott The Hoople
I remember before this came out, I'd heard exactly one song by Mott – “Midnight Lady†– it was played a lot on the radio but got nowhere,,,,,,,,,
Was listening to “Rosko's Round Table “ one Friday tea-time – Emperor Rosko, the DJ, used to have a panel of 2-3 people on every week to vote on new records – the first record that particular week was something by Melanie, “I went to climb a mountain†or something like that – the next one up was an instant classic, I thought at the time it was called “All the young Doâ€â€¦â€¦.Rosko said it was a Bowie song, well I'd heard about 3 Bowie songs by then – and loved ‘em all – but this took my perceptions to a new level………from pop to rock…..
Mott, along with Nazareth, took me into a new level of listening – “Oh, if you like them, you'll love Led Zepâ€â€¦â€¦..
Scuse the long preamble, but this song had a huge influence on me – and I still love Ian Hunter's music to this day – there's not one song of his I can honestly say I'm bored with after 30 years……..
So OK, shut up Vic and get on with it……..

But he can kick like a mule, it's a real mean team –
But we can love, oh yes, we can love……
And my brother's back at home with his Beatles and his Stones,

What a drag, too many snags,,,,

Oh, is that concrete all around,
Or is it in my head,
Yeah I'm a dude dad,
Repeat chorus…till it fades out – with a lot of ad-libs!!!!
I have plenty more Mott stuff in my head if anyone still cares.....

Great song Vic. I loved this song too, especially that opening solo. I ran out and bought the album. Ian Hunter is a great singer.
All the way to Memphis.....

If you know something better than Rock and Roll, I'd like to hear it - Jerry Lee Lewis
I still have a (Very Battered!!!) copy of that album on vinyl!! As far as I know, it's never been released on CD......but most of the tracks are on "The Ballad of Mott - A Retrospective", released on the Columbia label - off the top of my head, I think "Soft Ground" and "Jerkin' Crocus" are the only tracks missing......
Columbia 474420 is the number, its a double album....

Hey Vic,
Check this out. A Marc Bolan model guitar. The legend lives on.

I can only ever remember him using Les Pauls, apart from the odd occasion he used a flying V......
Nice guitar though, and a reasonable price........

I have a great shot of Marc playing a white Strat at Massey Hall in Toronto about 1971-73.
It was shot from the edge of the stage.
Been looking for the neg for 25+ years although I have a number of prints
including a 11x14 I printed in college about , I never get around to having it scanned.
I agree, you usually think of that red Les Paul, but Marc used other guitars.

You have a very thankful fan. I wish I could reciprocate...but have never had the knack to get the notes right. However, All the Mott, Ian Hunter, Roy Wood, Bolan, Jagger, Davies, Beatles, Prettys, you can muster...I will consume hungrily hereabouts...
Thanks for all yopu've done already!! Brilliant!
You `preamble' on as much as you want Vic!
It's always interesting to read how contributors to this forum came across the songs and their history with the songs.
Good one Vic, keep em coming.
Respect
Chris
The guitar is all right John but you'll never make a living out of it! (John Lennon's Aunt Mimi)
Saw Ian Hunter performing on Jools's hootnenanny (God knows how you spell it) on New years Eve just passed. I only put it on to see Clappers play but he didnt perform until quite late in the show (well past midnight) but Ian Hunter was excellent with electro acoustic. Did all the old classics but not my favourite "Once Bitten Twice Shy" his first solo hit, I have the album somewhere sems like eons since I heard it almost a lifetime ago.
Right, I'm off to search for the tab now!

He performed this about 3 years ago with "Ringo and his Traveling All Stars" in Atlantic City. If you want this song on CD, it's in one of the "Ringo" travelling all star series.
It was big hit at the concert!

I purchased a newer Ian Hunter cd a few weeks ago. It has just been released in the U.S. but it's a few years old. It's a stripped down (kinda acoustic) live cd with an orchestra. It's called "Strings Attached". IAN SOUNDS GREAT !!!!! and it has most of his hits.

Vic,
You bring back some great memories with this transcription. I first saw Mott Live on Broadway, the first rock and roll Band to play on Broadway. I will never forget the beautiful italian marble entry way and the perplexed look on the bartenders face in the lobby as ragged jean and t-shirt clad youths lined up for shots of Jack instead of the waiting champagne and wine he had uncorked. Queen was the opening act right before their first album came out here in the states. One of the best shows I have ever seen. You wouldn't by chance have the tab for Sweet Angeline floating around in your head would you?
Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.
