Classic Rock- Hey Tonight- CCR

OK, this is for Vic, and Twisted Fingers, and Corbind, and Chris and everybody who loves Creedence Clearwater Revival.

This song is not difficult, but it will take some practice. One thing
in this song never changes... the eighth beat shuffle. Just keep that
steady beat and you'll have this song down.

Here is a band that did an excellent job of covering this song so you can hear how it goes.

Intro- This is actually the toughest part. Get this down the rest is
cake.

OK, play the top line 3 times and then the bottom line 2 times. That is
the intro. You have to be really quick on that slide down from the 9th
fret to the 5th fret on the B string.

On the bottom line, all you are really doing is playing E, B, E, B
Major chords and hitting the open B & E strings in between. The
genius of John Fogerty, it sounds like an open tuning or two guitars.

The easy part is the steady beat.

OK, now the Verse begins. There are only 4 chords in this song, and John plays these rhythm patterns every time.

Wes strikes again - I was always a touch scared of this one but after a quick run-through I realise it's not actually as hard as it sounds!!!

Works for me........at this rate we should have the CCR tribute band up and running by July....... :D

YAY! CCR Tribute Band. =) Funny thing. Wes posted this and guess what song was playing on the radio when I left for work this morning.

Wes, do you control the vertical? The horizontal? *cues Twilight Zone theme music* :shock:

Wes, are you related to Mr. Hodge? Glad you're putting out some songs for us. I looked at one part and I'm having a hard time imagining how I'd play the notes on the 4th fret D and G strings. I would normally barre my index on the 4th fret so that would pose a problem when it somes to striking the open notes on the B and e strings. How do you position your hand/fingers?

Well, this is how I do it, doesn't mean you HAVE to use the same fingering.

This is natural for me, plus it sets me up to go down to the partial E Major chord and come back up again. Just slide your middle finger down the D string and back up again.

Everybody is different, what is easy to me might be difficult for you and vice versa.... But I always look for a way to "set myself up". So (for me),
the most difficult move is the first change from E to B chords. After that it's easy.

A person with large hands or long fingers might play that first E like this;

e-----------

This way your middle finger would stay on the D string throughout this riff.

If I am confusing anybody with the chord names, what I mean is this

Well done, this is a nice arrangement. I haven't heard this song for 20+ years. John Foggerty is a musical giant. Thanks for the reminder about this song!

But, there is a small mistake in the intro tabulation - section 2. The 2 and the 1 are the wrong way round on strings three and four. This mistake isn't repeated in later posts but may trip up beginners.

Thanks for pointing that out, you are correct. I have corrected it. :D

I wrote this tab some time ago before I knew about the Code tag. So it did not line up too well. After seeing your post I decided to go back and edit it adding the Code tags. Now it looks much better (I hope). I want to eventually go back and correct all my older tabs.

I am sure you will find this song very easy now, you are far more experienced than when I originally posted this. The tab should be a little easier to read as well, I corrected it with Code tags.
