Roy Orbison – You Got It

I love the acoustic rhythm guitar on this – it may seem a little daunting at first but with a little forward planning the changes really aren't that difficult.

Chords used –

---A-G-D-E--F#m-C#m-A+
E--0-3-2--0--2-----4-----1
B--2-0-3--0--2-----5-----2
G--2-0-2--1--2-----6-----2
D--2-0-0--2--4-----6-----3
A--0-2-0--2--4-----4-----0
E--0-3-x--0--2-----4-----x

And suggested fingerings for them –

For the A, 1st finger on the D string, 2nd finger on the G string, 3rd finger on the B string – this makes the change to the A+ (A augmented) chord in the chorus easier. For the A+ chord, keep the 2nd and 3rd fingers where they are, bring the 1st finger across to the top E string and play the D string with your pinkie.

For the E chord, I suggest using the 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers – this can then be slid up two frets and the first finger used as a barre for the F#m.

Then of course there's that little bass note riff at the end of the chorus –

Riff –

D –2-2-0-0
A -----------4-4-2-2-0-0
E -------------------------4-4-2-2-0-0

Intro –

A/G/D A/G/D

(A)Everytime I look in(G)to your (D)loving (a)eyes,(G/D)
(A)I see love that (G)money (D)just can't (E)buy,(G)
One (A)look from (F#m)you, I (C#m)drift a(E)way,
I (A)pray that (F#m)you are (C#m)here to (E)stay,

(Chorus)

(A)Any(E)thing you (F#m)want, you (D)got it,
(A)Any(E)thing you (F#m)need, you (D)got it,
(A)Any(A+)thing at (F#m)all, you (D)got it,
(A)Ba-(E)by,

(play the riff once here)

Every time I hold you I begin to understand,
Everything about you tells me I'm your man,
I live my life to be with you,
No-one can do the things you do,

Chorus repeat – then repeat riff four times –
First time played on it's own
Second time, sing first line of chorus
Third time, sing second line of chorus
Fourth time, sing “Anything at all”

Then there is an instrumental passage – just play the chords used in the chorus while singing “doo doo doo doo doo”

(A)I'm glad to (F#m)give my (C#m)love to (E)you,
I (A)know you (F#m)feel the (C#m)way I (E)do,

Chorus repeat – repeat riff – repeat chorus

Repeat riff a further twice –

First time, singing “Anything you want, you got it”
Second time, sing “Anything at all”,

(E)You (A)got it!

I know a few songs by the big O - they're great for strumming practise because you really have to concentrate - he doesn't care how long this line or that line should be, if he can fit a bit more in as well he will!!!

PS anyone ever notice that the little descending bassnote riff in You Got It is virtually the same as the riff from "Pretty Woman" played backwards...............?

My 73 year-old dad once said, "I love the guitar in this song." Given that he felt music died along with Glenn Miller, I was pretty shocked. I'm going to have to learn this for him.

Thanks, Vic.
