Classic Rock Hey You Bachman Turner Overdrive

This goes out to Michhill8. It's a great song for the Easy Song
Database, you'll be playing in minutes. I was a big fan of Randy Bachman myself. His solo on American Woman by the Guess Who rates
as one of the greatest solos ever in my book.

Chords used in this song

A E/G# D/F# F/A C#m/G# Bm/F# F G A B D E

e--5---4------2-----5----4------2----1------------------------
b--5---5------3-----6----5------3----1----3---5---7---7---9---
g--6---4------2-----5----6------4----2----4---6---8---7---9---
d--7---6------4-----7----6------4----3----5---7---9---7---9---
a-----------------------------------------5---7---9---5---7---
e-----------------------------------------3---5---7-----------

The Intro- played Clean with Phase

A E/G# D/F# F/A C#m/G#

e--5--55---/4--4444-X---2--22---/5--5555-X---/4—-44—-4--4444-
b--5--55---/5--5555-X---3--33---/6--6666-X---/5—-55—-5--5555-
g--6--66---/4--4444-X---2--22---/5--5555-X---/6—-66—-6--6666-
d--7--77---/6--6666-X---4--44---/7--7777-X---/6—-66—-6--6666-
a------------------------------------------------------------
e------------------------------------------------------------

Bm/F# F/A F

e--X---2--22---/5--5555----(1—-1111)-- Play entire riff twice.
b--X---3--33---/6--6666----(1—-1111)-- The second time through
g--X---4--44---/5--5555----(2—-2222)-- substitute the F chord
d--X---4--44---/7--7777----(3—-3333)-- for the F/A chord.
a-------------------------------------
e-------------------------------------

OK that was the intro. It is probably the toughest part of the song.
One thing you will notice. On all chords your ring finger stays on
the D string. The intro is played very loose with slides. Try to
get a very fluid relaxed feel. Play this entire riff twice.

Note- All of the chords in the Intro are played with a mini-barre
with your index finger over the first 3 strings.

Verses- (Riff A)played with Overdrive

D A G D

e-----------------------
b---7---5-------3---7--- Play 4 times
g---7---6-------4---7---
d---7---7-------5---7---
a---5---7-------5---5---
e-------5-------3-------

Doesn't get any easier than this. Just 3 power chords.

D...A...rest G...D...rest

1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

There is a little run at the end of the D chord after you have played
this riff 4 times. It goes;

e------------------
b-(7)--------------
g-(7)--------------
d-(7)--------------
a—(5)5--44---------
e-----------77--00-

One more part and that is the chorus.

Chorus- (Riff B) played with Overdrive

A B D E

e------------------------------------------------
b------------------------------------------------ Play 8 times
g-----------------------7-7-7-7---9-9------------
d—7-7-7-7----9-9-9-9----7-7-7-7---9-9------------
a—7-7-7-7----9-9-9-9----5-5-5-5---7-7--9p-7------
e—5-5-5-5----7-7-7-7-----------------------9p-7—-

This is played in straight eighth notes. The little
pull-off run at the end is sixteenth notes.

That's it. That is all the parts to the song. So the form for the
whole song goes like this.

Intro- Play 2 times

Verse 1- Play Riff A 4 times

Chorus- Play Riff B 8 times

Verse 2- Play Riff A 4 times

Chorus- Play Riff B 8 times

Intro- Play 2 times

Chorus- Play Riff B 8 times

Chorus- Play Riff B 4 times (Note- play this part palm-muted)

Chorus- Play Riff B (fades out after 6 times)

Here are the lyrics.

Hey you! You say you wanna change the world.
It's alright, with me there's no regret.
It's my turn, the circle game has brought me here
And I won't let down 'til ev'ry sun has set.

You realize now,
You should've tried now (ooh)
The music's gone now,
You lost it somehow.

Hey you! Sha-la-la-la
Hey you! Sha-la-la-la
Woo! Sha-la-la-la
Woo! La-la-la-la

Hey you! You say the race is much too fast.
It's okay, with me I'm keepin' pace.
It's my game, the music is inside my head.
For ev'ryone on top there's one who can replace

You realize now,
You should've tried now (ooh)
The music's gone now,
You lost it somehow.

Hey you! Sha-la-la-la
Hey you! Sha-la-la-la
Woo! Sha-la-la-la
Woo! La-la-la-la

Hi wes

first of all thanks for this excellent song: you will become my rock guru! As you said I learnt to play the chorus and the verse in just a few minutes (the chorus at the first take!).

I have to work a bit with the intro tough because it uses chord shapes that I do not know. Regarding the chord changes, listening to the song, I realized that the full intro lasts 4 measures: am I correct thinking that all chord changes half measure?

Thanks in advance

Matteo

p.s. If someone is interested I coudl post a simple version of both "you ain't seen nothin yet" and "takin care of business" of the great Bachman Turner Overdrive

Wow, you brought this back from almost 3 years ago. :D

Those chord forms could be fretted like this:

A E/G# D/F# F/A C#m/G# Bm/F# F G A B D E

e--5i---4i------2i-----5i----4i------2i----1i-----------------------------
b--5i---5m------3m-----6m----5m------3m----1i----3i---5i---7i---7r---9r---
g--6m---4i------2i-----5i----6p------4p----2m----4m---6m---8m---7r---9r---
d--7r---6r------4r-----7r----6r------4r----3r----5p---7p---9p---7r---9r---
a------------------------------------------------5r---7r---9r---5i---7i---
e------------------------------------------------3i---5i---7i-------------

On the A, E/G#, D/F#, F/A, C#m/G#, Bm/F#, and F chords I personally hold a barre over the high E, B, and G strings with my index finger. There are alternate ways to fret these chords, but this makes for easy transition between chords as you just have to reposition the middle, ring, and pinky fingers. These are very common fingerings for these 4 string chords.

And I haven't really counted it out, but yes, each chord is held about 2 beats. The strumming is really sixteenth notes.

Glad you liked this old song.
