I haven't put one up for a while, so here's a classic from the heyday of British pop. I absolutely love this song by Smokie from around 1974 ish I think. Yet again they are a band who have stood the test of time with few line-up changes. They are still massive on the European and Far East touring circuit as far as I know.

Why is it here? well it is again dead easy chords. You can almost single strum out the lyrics of the verses nice and slow and then rip into the chorus lines with a good lilting beat.

Please note Britsh GNers no "Roy Chubby Brown" expletives here. This is the original best as I can get it as the tab sites don't have complete lyrics.

The tricky bit comes in the second line of each verse where you have to pause for two beats between the (E) single d and the (A) dududu and then straight into (E)d-udu (d means downstrum) (u means upstrum)

The choruses are straight up down strumming.

Hope you understand me its very difficult to write with your guitar on your knee memorising the strum. If you have the CD of the song you'll soon get it. This will make a great pub song. And, Vic this would suit your voice well mate from what I've heard.

Anyway here it is:

Verse 1:

(A)Sally called, when she got the word,

(D)She said "I suppose you've heard (E)(Pause two beats)(A)about Alice." (E)

(A)Well, I rushed to the window, and I looked outside,

(D)And I could hardly believe my eyes,

(E)A big limousine rolled up into (A)Alice's drive.(E)

Chorus:

(A)I don't know why she's leaving, or where she's gonna go,

(D)I guess she's got her reasons but I just don't wanna know,

(E)'Cause for twenty four years I've been living next door to (A)Alice. (E)

(A)Twenty four years, just waiting' for a chance,

(D)To tell her how I feel, and maybe get a second glance,

(D)Now I've (E)gotta get used to not (E7)living next door to (A)Alice. (E)

Verse 2:

(A)We grew up together, two kids in the park,

(D)Carved our initials deep in the bark.(E)(Pause two beats(A)Me and Alice. (E)

(A)Now she walks to the door with her head held high,

(D)And just for a moment, I caught her eye,

(E)As the big limousine pulled slowly out of (A)Alice's drive. (E)

Verse 3:

(A)Then Sally called back, and asked how I felt,

(D)She said "I know how to help you,(E)(Pause two beats)(A)get over Alice."(E)

(A)She said "Now, Alice is gone, but I'm still here.

(D)And you know I've been waiting twenty four years.........."

(E)And the big limousine disappeared from (A)Alice's drive. (E)

Final Line Outro:

(D)No, I'll (E)never get used to not (E7)living next door to (A)Alice...

Enjoy it everyone

Chris

LOL, this brings back memories.....but we won't go into that......

Funny thing about this song.....a band called New World put it out as a single about 71 or 72, they'd had about 3 hits, in a sort of folk-rock vein....Tom Tom Turnaround, Kara Kara, and their first hit was a cover of "Rose Garden" - got to about #15 in the charts when Lynn Anderson's version was at #2, about the same time as McCartney's "Another Day".....anyway New World's version didn't even scratch the top 40, and that was the end of their chart career...I think they were regulars on the Two Ronnies at the time.....

Then a couple of years later, along come Smokie, release the same song on the same label - RAK - with the same producer - Mickie Most - and it's a massive hit.....

oh and yes - the Roy Chubby Brown version is still popular at parties.....

Nice easy song to play, nice one Chris.....

Oh well, back to the guitar, working on another classic at the moment....watch this space....

:D :D :D

LOL - tried playing this on the 12-string earlier, the Mrs walked in...."Alice? Alice? Who the **** is Alice?"

Asked her who did the original - she hadn't a clue......

Ah well......

Funny - that version is very popular, here in Germany, at fairgrounds. You walk past one of the rides and hear "Alice, Alice, who the **** is Alice?" blasting out at you. Very ocassionally, you'll get it in the beer tent and the entire audience joins in the chorus - 90% of whom are totally oblivious to what they're singing.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

Thank you for posting this

I love this old song takes me back to my youth and long hair and all that sort of stuff .

I'll admit that I owned Smokey ( tapes and had them on record as well )

I am currently working my way through it , finding it hard but everything new to me is hard .

Wish I could play alot better though , where is that magic potion that you rub on your hands that makes you play like Clapton

Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am
