I was kinda surprised when I found this on the new Tom Waits Orphans album disc 2 - this was released on Norah Jones' 'Feels like home' a few years ago, but it has never occured to me that it was a Wiats / Brennan piece

Anyway here it is

Notice the slight change on the last lines of the verses. 1&2 are different from 3&4, the only difference being an extra F at the end of the fifth lines of verse 3 and 4.

Oh - If you think Bb is akward. G should be pretty straight forward, substitue as follows:

Bb -> G
gm -> em
Eb -> C
F -> D

Oh2 - for those of you unfamiliar with it - I made a quick mp3 of the first verse in case you're interested. Very simple - I've known the song for just about 23 minutes, so this is just to give an impression of style, strumming and phrasing - just recorded with my laptop's integrated mic too - be gentle :-)

The long way home - Tom Waits

Bb
Well I stumbled in the darkness

I'm lost and alone

Though I said I'd go before us
gm
to show the way back home
Eb Bb
Is there a light up ahead
Eb
I can't hold onto very long
Bb F Bb
Forgive me pretty baby but I always take the long way home

Money's just something you throw
Off the back of a train
Got a handful of lightening
And hat full of rain
And I know that I said
I'd never do it again
I love you pretty baby but I'll always take the long way home

I put food on the table
And roof over our head
But I'd trade it all tomorrow
For The highway instead
Eb F
Watch your back keep your eyes shut tight
Bb Eb
Your love's the only thing I've ever known
But one thing for sure pretty baby I'll always take the long way home

Bridge
F | Bb | Eb | F |

I love you baby
More than the whole wide world
You are my woman
you know you are my pearl
Eb F
Let's go out past the party lights
Bb Eb
Where can We finally be alone
Come with me and together we can take the long way home

Hey! I never even knew this song existed until I saw this post - it's really entertaining. Tom's vocal range makes guys like me feel adequate - although Norah Jones makes it really melodic, doesn't she?

One question - on your mp3 are you picking alternating bass notes interspersed with percussive strums? Or just normal strums on the treble strings? Sounds like percussive, but the recording may not have been tonally accurate.

Cheers,

David

Thanks Lars. I played it through my laptop speakers and they're not the greatest.

Cheers,

David
