SORRY - FIRST VERSION HAD A COUPLE OF ERRORS IN, THIS IS 100% CORRECT!

Greetings again one and all.

This one is definitely for the Wellerheads, its from the fantastic album Heavy Soul - track 8 for those of you that are interested. Although its full of electric guitars and effects, its just as strong acoustic, so this is how I play it. The chords aren't that tricky, the secret is in the strumming, so I have tried to give an idea of how to strum it for each bit.

First things first, the chord shapes -
G - 320001
Em 022000
G* 322000 (think this is Em/G actually)
D/f# 2x0232 (if you can't play this, play a normal D)
Cmaj7 x32000
D xx0232
Dsus4 xx0233 (add pinky to high E string 3rd fret - easy!)
C* - x32013 (a C with with pinky on 3rd fret high E)
Em7 022030

Its in 4/4 time, so count 4 beats to each bar. You want to try and give the impression of a nice rhythmic song, mix your strumming up a bit if you can.

OK here's how to play the verses, I have used verse one as an example
Em D
Minds alive! On Friday Street
G* D/f#
Summerflys around my feet
Cmaj7 Cmaj7
And wee still stars
D Dsus4 D
Are in my eyes
G C*
And mine's alive on Friday Street

G C* G C*

Start off with a long raking downstroke on the Em, do not strum anything at this point, just sing (yeah, easier said than done !) same on the D, G* and D/f# - the good news is that gives you LOADS of time to get your fingers in position for each chord. Don't start strumming until you get to the Cmaj7 , then its D / D / D U/D/U/D D / D. You stay on the Cmaj7 for two bars, i.e two counts of 4. Same on the D section, stay on it for two couunts of four. On the second count, bung in a quick Dsus4 - just put your pinky on the high E string 3rd fret, and then off again, try and use the same strum as for the C - as loong as you start with three straight downstrums, and end on a couple of downstrums, you'll be fine.

Then into the G for "mines alive on..." if possible, use your pinky to fret the high E string - when you move to the C, leave it there! This bit needs to be 4 beats of each and repeats a total of 3 times, so its G C G C G C

As for strumming, I tend to do D / D / Dud to a count of 1, 2, 3 and 4 for both bits, this sounds ok, anything with rhythm will be fine.

OK that's pretty much covered the verse parts. Next the "bridge" bit "and i see myself.."

D
And I see myself
Em
And it seems so clear
D
I can walk through the world
Cmaj7
Like I'm not really here
D Dsus4 D
And I really don't care
G C*
'Cause mine's still alive on Friday Street

You need to keep this driving along so use mainly downstrums, but stay on each chord for two bars (count of eight) for the D, Em, D, Cmaj7 bit, and again for the last D section (throw in your Dsus4 to break it up) before returning to a count of four and your "normal" strumming for the last line.

You then repeat the G C* bit twice as an instrumental break, before returning to single strums for the start of the next verse.

That's about it folks - end with a nice full G2 (320033) and let it ring out.

I do hope somewhere out there knows this song, its a cracker and deserves to have a decent tab - there doesn't seem to be much on the net for this !

All the best. Here's the whole thing -
Friday Street – the Modfather Mr Paul Weller

Em D

Great stuff Matt!

I'm just getting back into Weller again and this is one of his best.
I mean its one you can really belt out and make the acoustic work for its living.

I have just posted "Brand New start" and would be greatful of any comments or corrections.

Cheers for now

Rod.

Be excellent to each other & party on dudes!
