This is very easy. And very nice. :)
PINK HOUSES - John Mellencamp
INTRO:
G C
e|---3---3-----------3---3--3-0---0---|
B|---3---3-----------3---3--3-1---1---|
G|---0---0---------0-0---0--0-0---0---|
D|---0---0--0--0h2---0--------2---2---|
A|---2---2-----------2--------3---3---|
E|---3---3-----------3----------------|
PLAY INTRO FOUR TIMES
G
There's a black man, with a black cat, livin' in a black neighborhood
G
He's got an interstate runnin' through his front yard
F C G C-G
You know he thinks he's got it so good
G
And there's a woman in the kitchen cleanin' up the evenin' slop
G F C
And he looks at her and says, "Hey darlin', I can remember when
G
you could stop a clock."
CHORUS:
C G
Ah, but ain't that America for you and me
C G
Ain't that America somethin' to see, baby
C D
Ain't that America home of the free, yeah
C
Little pink houses for you and me, oh yeah, for you and me
REPEAT INTRO TWICE
FOLLOW THE SAME PATTERN IN ALL VERSES
Well there's a young man in a t-shirt, listenin' to a rockin' rollin' station
He's got ah greasy hair, greasy smile
He says, "Lord this must be my destination."
'Cause they told me when I was younger, said, "Boy you're gonna be president."
But just like everything else those old crazy dreams
Just kinda came and went
REPEAT CHORUS
REPEAT INTRO FOUR TIMES
Well there's people and more people, what do they know, know know
Go to work in some high rise
And vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico
And there's winners and there's losers, but they ain't no big deal
'Cause the simple man baby pays for the thrills, the bills,
the pills that kill
REPEAT CHORUS TWICE, END IN G

Sorry to ask but do you have a suggestion for a stumming pattern or is it about the same as the intro.
I woundn't say anything but I really like this song but its been a while since I heard it and can't remember the pattern.
Thanks
Guitar is easier to say than saxamaphone.. Doh!!
For a strumming pattern I would suggest something simple like:
1----2----3----4----
D D U U D U
By the way, standard tuning (EADGBE).

On that third line
" F C G C-G "
"You know he thinks he's got it so good "
whats a C-G chord?
-Bull
A quick transition from G to C and then back to G, with a small duration.

Do I have to do a full G chord? Or can I get away with just putting my ring finger on the third fret and strumming the bottom 4 strings?
-Bull
Yeah, that will work as well. ;D

If you use the 2-3-4 version of G instead of the 1-2-3 version, you might be able to pull off the whole chord, since your fingers won't have to move as much in the transition.
That is what I have been focussing on of late. 2-3-4 version of G and A. G to make transitions easier, and A to make it a little easier to squish all my fingers on the second fret.
It's hard, but it is getting easier with practice. In a month I won't even remember the old way :)

The 2-3-4 transition also works on this song. I think the 1-2-3-4 version sounds a little better, but you use the easier one to practice transitions.
And the best way to get the strumming is listening to the song carefully and play along, 'cause that is quite hard to explain here. :)

INTRO: (like the original recording, this includes the sliding, here it is arranged for solo performance in standard tuning instead of Open G)
INTRO PART ONE: 2X
1/E |-------------0-3-|
2/B |-------------1-3-|
3/G |-----0-0-----0-0-|
4/D |-------0--0--2-0-|
5/A |-------2--2--3-2-|
6/E |-3/7---3--3----3-|
INTRO PART TWO: 2X
1/E |--------------0-3-|
2/B |--------------1-3-|
3/G |--------------0-0-|
4/D |-------0--0-0-2-0-|
5/A |-------2--2-2-3-2-|
6/E |-3/7-3-3--3-3---3-|
A long time classic rock player in town showed me the intro and sure enough, he was right. It was right there in my Mellencamp tab book if I had looked.
E doesn't = MC2, E = Fb
Music "Theory"? "It's not just a theory, it's the way it is!"
Jonny T.
Great song, I think I'm gonna add it to my band's setlist.
Now, I just tried it for the first time ever. For the C and F chords I kept my hand in the same position and played it like this.
E----3-------3---
B----3-------3---
G----0-------2---
D----2-------3----
A----3-------------
E------------------
Not a theory guy, so I don't know what these are called.
C2? F??
Makes for a very quick transition, and sounded great (I'm going on memory). What do you think?
If you know something better than Rock and Roll, I'd like to hear it - Jerry Lee Lewis
Cadd9 and F6add9, to be more precise. ;D
