Here is another song by Tom Petty. It's a new one from “Highway Companion”. Standard tuning - no CAPO. Most of the song is E with an E/G. Technically, you should palm mute the E chord (with the fingers) throughout the song (it gives it that funky chord sound) but if hands get tired just play the E. I'll try to describe the strumming pattern but again, listen to the song – it's a little tricky. In the bridge there is a B chord. Try the B7, I don't know if that will sound right though?
For the E and E/G chords try to hit the Base strings only (E,A,D,G), then strum all the strings before going to the A chords. Strum dudu (palm mute E if you can) count to 6 (dudu) then use your pinky to hammer on the E string at the third fret TWICE (dd). When you hear the song you will understand.
Chords:
E - 022100 and 0221XX (try to hit base strings only on the verse)
E/G – 322100
A - 002220
Asus – 002230
D - 000232
G - 320001
B - x2444x or X24442
B7 - 21201

Saving Grace
E (count to 6) E/G (twice)
I'm passing sleeping cities
E (count to 6) E/G (twice)
Fading by degrees
E (count to 6) E/G (twice)
Not believing all I see to be so
E (count to 6) E/G (twice)
I'm flyin' over backyards
E (count to 6) E/G (twice)
Country homes and ranches
E (count to 6) E/G (twice)
Watching life between the branches below
E dududu (all strings)

Chorus:
A Asus
And it's hard to say
A Asus
Who you are these days
A
But you run on anyway
E (count to 6) E/G (twice)
Don't you baby?
E (count to 6) E/G (twice)
G
You keep running for another place
D
To find that saving grace
E (count to 6) E/G (twice)
Don't you baby?
E (count to 6) E/G (twice)

Back to verse:

I'm moving on alone
over ground that no one owns
Past statues that atone for my sins
There's a guard on every door
And a drink on every floor
Overflowing with a thousand amens

Chorus

Bridge:
E A E A E A B

You're rolling up the carpet
Of your fathers two-room mansion
No headroom for expansion no more
And there's a corner of the floor
They're telling you is yours
You're confident but not really sure

Chorus
Outro:
G
G
You keep running for another place
D
To find that saving grace
E (count to 6) E/G (twice)
Don't you baby?
E (count to 6) E/G (twice)

G
You keep running for another place
D
To find that saving grace
E (count to 6) E/G (twice)
Don't you baby?
E (count to 6) E/G (twice)
E (strum all strings) End
