I thought I'd add another one to our Beatles collection. I've always liked this song, (as I do most Beatles songs! ), but I particularly like the lyrics. Don't you wish we could all live by them? 8) Enjoy. :D

Dan

The Beatles – We Can Work It Out
Lennon/McCartney

Verse #1:

D Dsus4 D
Try to see it my way

Dsus4 C D
Do I have to keep on talking ‘til I can't go on?

D Dsus4 D
While you see it your way

Dsus4 C D
Run the risk of knowing that our love may soon be gone

G D G A
We can work it out, we can work it out

Verse #2:

D Dsus4 D
Think of what you're saying

Dsus4 C D
You can get it wrong and still you think that it's all right

D Dsus4 D
Think of what I'm saying

Dsus4 C D
We can work it out and get it straight or say good night

G D G A
We can work it out, we can work it out

Chorus:

Bm G F#
Life is very short and there's no time

Bm Bm/A Bm/G Bm/F#
For fussing and fighting my friend

Bm G F#
I have always thought that it's a crime

Bm Bm/A Bm/G Bm/F#
So I will ask you once again…

Verse #3:

D Dsus4 D
Try to see it my way

Dsus4 C D
Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong

D Dsus4 D
While you see it your way

Dsus4 C D
There's a chance that we might fall apart before too long

G D G A
We can work it out, we can work it out

Chorus:

Bm G F#
Life is very short and there's no time

Bm Bm/A Bm/G Bm/F#
For fussing and fighting my friend

Bm G F#
I have always thought that it's a crime

Bm Bm/A Bm/G Bm/F#
So I will ask you once again…

Repeat verse #3

End:

-----------0--2--3---2----------
--------3------------3----------
-----2---------------2----------
--4------------------0----------
--------------------------------
--------------------------------

Chords Used:

D Dsus4 C G A Bm F# Bm/A Bm/G Bm/F#
-2----3----0--3-----2---2----------------2---------
-3----3----1--3--2--3---2----3-----3-----3---------
-2----2----0--0--2--4---3----4-----4-----4---------
-0----0----2--0--2--4---4----4-----4-----4---------
-----------3--2--0--2---4----0-----------2---------
--------------3---------2----------3-----2---------

Notes:
When switching from D to Dsus4, I use my index to barre the 1st 3 strings and my middle on the 2nd string/3rd fret – then just flatten my middle to hit the 1st string/3rd fret – then back up. If you use your index, middle, & ring to play a D chord, you'll have to use your pinky to grab the 1st string/3rd fret.
When playing the G chord in the chorus, it's easier if you play a G barre chord, (355433 – low to high), rather than an open G chord, and then slide your barre position down 1 fret to play the F# chord. This also helps in transitioning to your next chord: Bm.
When playing the Bm – Bm/A – Bm/G – Bm/F# walk-down in the chorus, play your Bm, lift your index for the Bm/A, use your index to grab the G note on the 6th string/3rd fret, while slightly touching the 5th string to mute it, for the Bm/G, then lay your index all the way across the 2nd fret to make your barre again. Notice that your ring, middle, and pinky fingers stay anchored to their positions throughout.

Good one Dan! When the single came out and I first heard the Harmonium on this song and the rich bass sounds of "Daytripper" on the other side, I remember thinking it just doesn't get any better than this . . . and it still doesn't!!!!

Thanks especially for your notes. They were very helpful. (Particularly, on how to play the Bm walkdown. I was always trying to use my thumb and I just couldn't do it very well. Your way is much better!) I am trying to get comfortable substituting a Cadd9 (x23033) for the C chord. Not clean yet, but I'm working on it.

Thanks again . . . Shug

Thanks shug! :D

I know what you mean about the Cadd9, I always end up playing a G instead! :o Don't know why it's so hard to get to from the Dsus4, but good thing a regular C sounds good too. 8)

Take care,
Dan

Great song. Thanks a lot. I listened to the 'Tesla' version a lot. It's in the Five Man Acoustical Jam album. Worth a listen.

Thanks Dan, great song but I always find it hard to get the rhythm right on this one, timing wise that is.
Guess I will have to listen to the track properly a few times to get it down
I particularly like the way this really works
Bm Bm/A Bm/G Bm/F#
For fussing and fighting my friend

brilliant job Dan !!!

Be excellent to each other & party on dudes!

Thanks guys, glad you're enjoying it! :D

oktay - I'll have to check out the Tesla version. Thanks for the heads up. 8)

Rodders - I agree, the timing on this one can be alittle tricky, especially given that the tempo is not the same throughout the song. Keep working on it. 8)

I forgot to post a link to the song too, so here are a couple of fine young lads for your listening & viewing pleasure:

Thanks! I've always loved this song. Now, to work out the strumming pattern, and off we go!
