I've been looking at some pedal clone kits to use as part of a science fair project to do with with my son. Does anybody have any favorite sources for kits? I've been looking at these http://www.buildyourownclone.com/index.html .

Thanks - and Happy New Year! :D

These where expensive kits , > 80 USD for overdrive (tube screamer) kit !
You can get a Behringer TO 800 (TS 808 clone) for around 30 USD.
But if you want to do a science project and can buy components elsewhere, you can find schematic drawings and information of the Tube Screamer here http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/TStech/tsxtech.htm
And here are schematic drawings of many guitar amps and pedals http://www.freeinfosociety.com/electronics/schempage.php?cat=1

Tanglewood TW28STE (Shadow P7 EQ) acoustic
Yamaha RGX 320FZ electric guitar/Egnater Tweaker 15 amp.
Yamaha RBX 270 bass/Laney DB 150 amp.

There's a very inexpensive overdrive/boost pedal kit out there sold by Weber called the "Texas Cattledrive Pedal". It's $20USD for the electronics alone and an additional $10USD for the enclosure. $30USD total. It's a very simple one-transistor (germanium) circuit with a bypass switch, volume, and tone control built on a clearly-marked printed circuit board. It looks to be ideal for a science project.

Simple, inexpensive, and hard to screw up. Plus, the thing sounds really really good, especially for driving a tube guitar amp! It's basically a '60s-era Dallas-Arbiter Rangemaster clone which was used by many of the '60s-'70s guitar-gods like Eric Clapton, Toni Iommi, Brian May, and Rory Gallagher.

Cheers!

Thanks Stratman! That certainly looks like a circuit even I couldn't mess up - and the price is decent.

http://www.smallbearelec.com , this is a good site that has alot of helpful "how to's" for effect building. There are a few pedals that are shown how they are built step by step, which i thought was great. It also has ALOT of parts that you can buy, the prices are pretty good: you pretty much can't get anything much cheaper unless you buy in bulk.

No problem, I haven't been on the forums for a while due to a severe "addiction" of effect building, so be careful, this can be a very fun and addictive hobby! :D

You can also check out http://www.generalguitargadgets.com , it has alot of pre-assembled kits that you can pick up for around $50-60, as well, you can buy pre-made circuit boards for all the different projects.

Even if you don't need those kits or circuit boards, there are a number of projects for very well known clones (The TS-808 Tube Screamer, Big Muff Pi Distortion, Vox Wah-wah, etc.)
