welcome to the forum.

what? no distortion or overdrive pedal?

general rule:
tone shapers first
time effects last.

so: guitar, tuner, boost, volume/wah, reverb, delay, amp.

the volume can go in lots of places. I like them before delay for some reason.

There is a lesson that discusses this...

well i have a 100 watt orange rockverb and i just rely that distortion. i actually like it alot better then using a pedal, i just use the floor switch to change from the clean channel to the dirty one. i kinda figured if im gonna buy an expensive amp, i should get one that has the tone that i want and the distortion. im not really sure if relying on the amplifiers distortion is even that much better, but id like to believe that using it instead of a pedal gives me a better sound because its not like artificial or anything =)

thanks for the effects pedal tips!

im new here and its really cool to see people helping each other out. :D

An effects loop would be ideal for delay, chorus, reverb, phase and the like. I personally don't like the sound of those effects distorted. Wah, boost, trem need to be in the main input.

using your amp's distortion is great. keep the volume of the guitar full up. use the volume pedal to control things.
you can go from clean sounding to sonic dirt then by flooring the vol pedal.
I like the idea of an effects loop for the time effects pedals (ie: delay).

umm...i kinda dont know what an effects loop is lol is that where you have a cable going from the back of your amp from the send hole going through all the pedals then back up to the back of the amp into the return hole?

this is the learning place. all questions welcome. I am learning at my old age still.
I don't have an FX loop (FX =effects) on my amp.
yes, FX loops are like that.

Q. for the more informed. does it mean that the pedals in the FX loop are not going through the preamp stage of an amp. ?

Thats right. An effects loop is post preamp. Kinda sounds like an oxymoron but...

You should see the pre-amp as an effect like the rest. Effects that you want after the pre-amp go into the loop, effects you want before the pre-amp go between the guitar and amp. So who cares? Well, imagine this: You have just a guitar, a delay pedal and the amp. If you put the pedal between the amp and guitar you play a note, the notes gets delayed (so you have, say,m three notes) and then these three notes get overdriven. Now if you have a short delay time they will blend in and the pre-amp will turn it into a blurry mess.

On the other hand, lets put it in the effects loop. Now you play, the note gets overdriven and you get two copies of that overdriven note. They are more definined and you don't have to worry about having the delay mix be influenced by the pre-amp. Best thing to do is experiment. What I would do:

guitar->tuner->volume pedal->comp->wah->preamp->delay->reverb->modulation->FXreturn

BTW, in a way a booster is an OD pedal as it'll increase the OD of the amp.

so when you say plug something into the preamp, does that mean plug it into the "input" hole, or the "send" hole?

The Preamp is the section of your amp that brings your guitars instrument level signal up to line level. This is also where any overdrive/distortion circuitry will be. The input on your amp goes here first. The effects loop is redirected after the preamp.
