For those on a budget, pick up the behringer compressor. $19 new, I use it and it's better then my Boss GX700 comp.

Aargh! This is not a compressor! If anything, it's a dynamic range expander!

OK - do I really need one of these things? If I don't want to drop $100 bucks on one right now, would I be well advised to get one of those Behringer Compression pedals? Will the rubber sound on the bottom strings be too annoying? Should I just save my money and buy one of these WowWow pedals at a later date?

What does it sound like with a HRD?

This pedal works the same for all amps. It is hard to explain but it "opens up" the tone. Your amp just sounds more alive. I was shocked at how muffled my tone sounded when I turned the SS off. I thought I had great tone, but it is really much more alive sounding now. It is not a distortion or anything like that. It is similar to the very warm and open tones a compressor provides, but it doesn't make my bass strings sound like rubber bands. It is not noisey at all, even at high settings. But I put it last in my chain as BBE recommends. If both controls are set to max your bass will tend to "boom" and your high end can get brittle and edgy. But I like the settings around 8 out of 10. But it sounds great with my HRD. I can get a real jangly rhythm guitar sound on my neck pickups, almost sounds like a real acoustic.

Some say this effect is subtle, but I can hear the difference easily. This pedal is really good for someone who uses clean tones, it will really make your tone full and warm. Makes my Tele sound great, not thin sounding at all with this pedal. Works good on distortion or overdrive pedals too, but you may have to come down a little on gain from your normal settings.

OK, I found an excellent clip that demonstrates what this pedal does. Listen to the difference in tone when this guy turns on the Sonic Stomp. It is just like they advertise, like taking the blanket off your amp.

This is exactly how this pedal works. :D

And here is another demo. It starts with the Crusher only, then the Sonic Stomp. Man, I like that Crusher, just gave myself GAS. :D

That nails Nirvana cold.
