Funny all those parallels between the two. But with the Sydney show hint, it has to be The Who. :D
I'll get something up tonight or tomorrow.
Actually, it was Queen's Crazy Little Thing Called Love - and given it was your first and initial guess, you got it right. Well done!
ROFL; I thought you were throwing that out there as a hint. Of COURSE it's Queen ...
(seriously, that WAS my first thought. no, really!)
Alright, maybe I tilted the pinball table there. Here's mine anyway, should be very easy to figure out:
You sure did Rush to get into the Limelight with this riff!

I have no clue, only a few guesses that turned out to be wrong. I guess Dan got it first anyway... cheers!
Yep, Dan's got it! 8)
Hope this one's not too easy:

Beautifully played!
Gosh, this has been keeping me busy and going round in my head.... Could it be that the band name is also the name of an American city?
Actually this one is from a solo artist that used to be in a band, but the band wasn't named after a city, but something much smaller. The artist has also done some acting, so yes, he is a star.
There's a clue leading to the song name in my original post as well. :)

.. and I was pretty certain that this was Boston's More Than a Feeling.... oh well, let me sleep over it! A star?
Yep, he was even a star when he joined his last group, although he wasn't the best.

Dang ... tip of the tongue ... :x
I know who just can't think of the song. I keep thinking Neil Young- Cinnamon Girl but I know that's wrong.
The artist in question was famous for an album "sans fil" right? It was the thing at the time.
Nope, not Neil Young. He has done a lot of albums, mostly covers of other people's songs, as he's not known as a songwriter. He's even appeared on the solo albums of every one of his former band mates.

I keep thinking of Pearl Jam's "Better Man" ... but I know that's not it.
