Hey!

I'm trying to learn Little wing by Jimi Hendrix. So far i've memmorized almost the whole intro, but i want to know what i'm actually doing.

My first question is what key the song is in. According to a tab the chords are:
Em G Am Em7 Bm Bb Am G Fadd9 C D

I assume that this is the chords when playing the song in standard tuning, while Jimi played it with the strings tuned down a half step.
We have G, C and D so could it be in the key if G?

It looks like the song is based around barre chords and then adding non-chord notes with hammer-ons and pull-offs to build melody and bass line. Right?

Thats it for now. Any tips and suggestions how to play this song would be valuable.
Thanks.

I believe it is in G. Em is also in G.

Yes, many hammer-ons/pull offs some done with double stops for that cool 'Lenny' sound. To my ears, I hear very few actual chords being played, but rather licks based off of the chords.

Great song, good luck.

Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Curtis Mayfield would play a double stop and hammer onto a note for that real grooooovy 'lenny' sound. Also found in Little Wing, Wind Cries Mary.

Here's a partial piece of the song that I did rather quickly using Garageband, POD xt and my strat. I just might record the entire thing eventually!

Check this out:

http://www.cyberfret.com/improvisation/pentatonic-modal-studies/index.php

it's basically an article on using single note improvisation to outline a certain chord progression (at least, using that article, you can figure out how to do it), so you can sort of write your own version with that instead of having to memorize another one. Whats really great about the article is that it shows you the different positions you can use and different chords (like using the blues scale, minus the natural 5th, to improvise over a min7b5 chord)
