I have the basic understanding of how to play major and minor and diminished chords. But how do I use the wierd chords like augmented, minor b5, and minor-maj7th?

Check David's article on these chords:

Those chords don't show up diatonically in major keys (except for the minor7 (b5)) but once you get into the melodic and harmonic minors they are much more common.

augmented is common in harmonic minor, and half diminished is like a nicer sounding way to help do diminished tricks (changing key) in a way.
