I purchased the "Music Theory for Guitarists" book after reading a lot of posts relevant to it..

Good book so far, and I finally think I understand how the circle of 5ths works... however, how to use this knowledge in practice?

Is this just a side "by the way, look how this works" methodology, or is there something I am missing?

How do you use this in musical construction?

The most common use is in finding the chords closely related to the key...

If you take a C major scale: C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C, and the C major chord as the I chord, the two halves - or tetrachords - of the C scale overlap the ones on either side:

F major: F-G-A-Bb-C-D-E-F, and the F major is the IV chord...

G major: G-A-B-C-D-E-F#-G, and the G major is the V chord.

So if somebody wants to play a tune in the key of Db, you'll know that the next key clockwise (Ab) is the V chord, and the next key counterclockwise (Gb) is the IV chord.

Pretty handy for I-IV-V progressions :)
