I probably know enought to figure this out but i'm being lazy.

I know how an F#minor bar chord is played. But can I play a F# minor chord as an open A chord with my thumb on the F# of the sixth string?

thanks.

That would be an F#min7 Jane, because of the E notes on strings 4 & 1

Almost, you're thinking along the right lines. F# minor is made up of the notes of F#, A and C#, but A major is A, C# and E.

Here's F# minor, and here's A major

thanks. actually, F#minor7 is what I want. I'm trying to (re)learn Fake Plastic Trees and of course there are various tabs out there but I always played it with a F#minor7.
