I've been working on Major scales more lately, and was wondering if the shapes for the different keys of Major or Minor Pentatonic scales are the same as Major scales..in that the shapes are the same but just starting on a different note for a different key. Make sense? Like are Minor Pentatonic scales of different keys shaped the same, but just start on a different notes? I realize there are several shapes within the different types of scales also.
The difference between a major scale and a major pentatonic is that the pentatonic is the major scale minus the IV and the vii (C major = C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C - CMajor pentatonic = C, D, E, G, A, C).
Aminor and Aminor pentatonic are different in that the ii and the VI are left out (Aminor = A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A - Aminor pentatonic = A, C, D, E, G, A).
If you already know that Aminor is the relative minor to Cmajor and C major is the relative major to Aminor, you'll realise that both major and minor pentatonics leave out the same notes (F & B).
I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

The Major Pentatonic is spelled 1 2 3 5 6
Compare that to the Major Scale and the Major Modes:
Major Scale is spelled 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Lydian is spelled 1 2 3 #4 5 6 7
Mixolydian is spelled 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7
^So you can see that all contain 1 2 3 5 6 (the major pentatonic)
Now the minor pentatonic is spelled 1 b3 4 5 b7
compare that to the minor scale and the other minor modes:
Aeolian is spelled 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7
Dorian is spelled 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7
Phrygian is spelled 1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 b7
^So you can see that all contain 1 b3 4 5 b7 (the minor pentatonic)
are Minor Pentatonic scales of different keys shaped the same, but just start on a different notes?
Yes.
:)
Any scale will have the same shape in other keys.... because the relationships between strings don't change while you play. So if a scale pattern goes 4-1 as it changes strings (or 2-1 or whatever), it'll be the same in any key.

Maybe you don't understand my question. I'm well aware that penta means 5 notes.
Thanks for the replies guys..I kinda had a feeling that the shapes were the same, just different root notes, just wanted to be sure.
