he asked if this was an A scale pattern and you replied yes but since the root was on the F# it's not an A scale it's and F# scale.

I think your confusion may lie in thinking of the red and black numbers as the numbers of the frets.

They're not.  They're the numbers of the fingers the author of the diagram suggests to use for each note:

1 = index finger
2 = middle finger
3 = ring finger
4 = pinkie finger

The pattern can be any major scale from C to B.

In fact it is also a fingering pattern for any mode of the major scale, but you'd put the red note elsewhere.

Not sure if Noteboat's and Helgi's responses were meant for me and I don't want to waste anyone's time but I understand the scale patterns and root notes etc. I just assumed in Musi's first post was that the first line on the fretboard diagram was in fact the nut which would make that scale pattern an F# major, not an A major that's all.

But in fact it was just a major scale pattern that didn't really specific what note the root was on so in either case it's not an A major scale per se unless you started the Red 2 on the fifth fret of the 6th string.

Basically, after you memorise all the notes on the fretboard you can make up your own fingering patterns. If not, CAGED is a good start.
