I've been learning John Mayer's St. Patrick's Day. I'm trying to translate some of these tabs to chords so I can maybe sneak some theory into my learning.

http://www3.sympatico.ca/g403z/patrick.txt

e---0-----------0-----7---7-------5---
b---7---7---7---5---5-5---5---5---5---
g---8---8---9---6---6-6---5---4---4---
d---6---6---9---6---6-6---5---4---4---
a---x---x---x---x---------x---x---x---
e---0---8---9---6---5-5---5---4---3---

For the first 2 chords, I get that they are (from top to bottom)
1) E F# D# G# x E
2 ) x F# D# G# x C

The major scale in the key of E is E F# G# A B C# D#

So chord #1 is made up of (in scale degrees) 1, 2 3, and 7. What kind of chord is this?
chord #2 is 2, 3, b6, and 7.

I know that a sus2 chord is 1 2 3 5, (from my Skeptical Guitarist book), but I don't know what these chords are.

Thanks!

The first chord is E G# D# F# E.
That is an Emaj9th.

The D# is the maj 7th, E is the root, G# is the 3rd, and the F# is the maj 2nd. (or 9th).

I would say that the 2nd chord is merely the the same chord Emaj9th with the root note as C.
So a Emaj9th/C.
