Does anyone know if there are any programs (preferably free ones!) that teach you how to read music available?

you cant really get a program to help you read music

like riding a bike.. downloading a program on how to ride a bike will not be able to let you ride a bike, its, hard to describe you just have to get used to it.

like playing, you cant get a program to teach you how to play guitar (advise, yes). the first time you pick up a guitar after looking through trillions of programs wont suddenly give you the ability

its practice and 'getting used to it'.

same for ear training, (unless it plays the sounds)

but you get what i mean.

i get a lot of notation from music schoolwork and i go through it and say the notes out loud, and work out the chords, then i get quicker and more used to them.

that is how i would say you should go about learning how to read notation.

then you can go confuse yourself with alto and tenner clef's lol.

I agree with alex, but it's always nice to learn as much as possible from as many sources as possible.

I was actually looking for this sort of thing a while back. I wanted to learn to read music notation. Unfortunately I have the attention span of a two year old,  and haven't had much luck trying to learn from a book. I found a great little program.

It's called Music Theory Basics, is freeware and can be found at :

I found it extremly useful. It made it much easier to learn and practise basic music notation. As well as doing ear training, and learning some theoy.
