I came across some theory yesterday, but I don't understand where it fits into the picture. It was just a single loose page, so it wasn't in context with anything.
It focuses on a major scale, and then constructs the chords from the notes of the major scale so that the scale note is the root of the chord, and the rest of the notes all lie within the same major scale.
So starting with a C major scale, you get the chords
Cmaj
Dmin
Emin
FMaj
GMaj
Amin
Bdiminished
Cmaj
I can understand that all those chords will sound good together, what with being constructed from notes within the same scale. But is there a word for this collection of scales? A starting point I can use to research this matter more deeply?
Thanks!
What you've listed is simply the chord progression for key of C. That's the pattern of chords for each scale:
major
minor
minor
major
major
minor
m7b5
major
Well we all shine on--like the moon and the stars and the sun.
-- John Lennon
The term for it is "harmonized major scale".
