According to the scales chart in this lesson, the Melodic and Harmonic Minor are the exact same scale. Is this accurate? Are the rest of the charts accurate? I don't have a much learnin' when it comes to minor scales. THX.

No, I don't think they are the same but they are close. Take a look at David's article Scales within Scales. He talks about this issue there.

This is the harmonic minor he shows. There's a flatted sixth.

The flatted note isn't in the melodic minor ascending. And it gets more complex if you look at the descending melodic minor.

I don't know a lot about these scales, so I'm not going to say anymore. Instead, I think I'll print out David's lesson and study it!

Now I remember reading that certain minor scales actually change when they are descending. But like you, I know very little else about minor scales. I'll study that column as well.

Also take a look at the column Minor Progress. All minors, all the time...

Peace

Natural minor scale:

1 - 2 - b3 - 4 - 5 - b6 - b7 - 8

in A minor, that's: A_BC_D_EF_G_A,

Harmonic minor scale:

1 - 2 - b3 - 4 - 5 - b6 - 7 - 8

in A minor, that's:A_BC_D_EF__G#A

Melodic minor scale ascending (descending, use natural minor):

1 - 2 - b3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8

in A minor, that's:A_BC_D_E_F#_G#A

Thanks hbriem. I was trying to figure out where I could find those scales for review. I'll be doing a lot of studying on this minor scale bit. Thanks all of you.
