About this time last night I was shocked to learn of the untimely death of forum member Vic Lewis. I hadn't know him very well... Talked to him a few times on MSN with Pet and the rest of the gang. I admired his writing on the Sunday Songwriters' board and was therefore deeply saddened to hear that he had passed. I dealt with this in my usual fashion of dealing with things... I wrote.

Anyhow.... I was once again shocked this morning to find that Vic was still amongst the living.. and that his death had been some terribible prank pulled by somebody... dont know who yet. Anyway... I wasn't going to throw away the ideas I had... so this is the result.

Vic. Dead or Alive. This one's for you.

"The Box"

They've got you dressed
In your Sunday best
They keep saying you look peaceful
But man I think you look like hell
We had some laughs
Lots of good times
Those were the days
But now all that's left to say is goodbye

So goodbye
God speed
Fair well
And the next time i see you we'll be...
In a better place
You'll have a smile on your face
and a drink in your hand
But until then...

I'll drink one down
Pour one on the ground
Crack bad jokes like you were still here
Try to pretend that I'm not scared
A simple fact
Ready or not
My time will come
Then my friend I'll be the one in the box

So goodbye
God speed
Fair well
And the next time i see you we'll be...
In a better place
You'll have a smile on your face
and a drink in your hand
But until then...

I hope I keep you waiting.

Wow, thats a really bad joke to play on anyone. I bet you were glad to find out it was a mistake. Probably not as glad as Vic was to find out he was still alive. One thing though, good lyrics came out of it. I like the way it flows. This is kind of ironic but you said,

I'll drink one down
pour one on the ground
crack bad jokes like you were still here. (well, he was)

what do you think of

I'll drink one down
pour one on the ground
Crack bad jokes like you're still around.

either way, It's a great tribute!

hey marv,

very nice song. i agree with pet and am glad you finished it. it has great sentiment without getting mushy. nice and consise, didn't go overboard.

it is nice that vic is still alive to be able to read a tribute song to his death.

i was wondering if someone was going to write about his death. nice to see that someone still did even though his is alive.

Sorry it took me so long to get round to replying....my head has been in some weird territory this last week or so.......

Weird isn't quite the word, reading your own obituary then reading a song written about your death......but it'll do until someone invents a better one...

I don't quite know what to say about this, if it had been written about someone else I'd have probably gushed and waxed lyrical......as it is, I like it - a lot - but it's kind of creepy as well........

Anyway it's nice to know someone took the time and trouble to write a very thoughtful and moving tribute....even if I am still here.......

:) :) :)

Vic.
