I thought of posting this in Slide or somewhere else, but , it IS a guitar.
here is my third try at making a lap steel. this time I honored a request of a friend who wanted to be able
to hear a lap steel unplugged yet be able to be amplified.
I took a plank of mahogany, cut the shape and routed it hollow. the top wood is western cedar.
the bridge is ebony and the saddle and nut are bone. the rosewood fretboard is inlaid with maple and pearl.
the pickup is a Seymour Duncan Antiquity from the 50's tele series.
it is a wood lovers delight, but I think it looks a little plain and homey.
when I get better at inlay I would want ropes and twisty things with binding.
maybe next time.
anyway. here is a pic and sound sample:
Awesome! Was it difficult to build? I ask because I'm a big enthusiast of DIY projects (I actually built a working talk-box that I will post pictures of when I'm done building the enclosure) and I wouldn't mind trying to build my own guitar (maybe a lap steel that is also a coffee table? ).

Very nice looking. You're right that is a bit plain, but I think it looks great and very professional.
Besides, making it look nice is the easier/fun part, ain't it? ;)

"I play live as playing dead is harder than it sounds!"
thanks all. it is a labor of love.
lap steel, when you look at it, is really basic.
it is a pickup between two points with a scale of 22 1/2 inches.
one end is a bridge. the other is a nut and tuners.
after that, it is a matter of ones design and taste.
my getting a dremel router really made a difference.
That's really nice, does it have any frets or are there just fret markings? Either way it looks beautiful.

Great job!

It's a long way to the top if you want to rock n roll!
Nice job! That looks awsome!

just the markings. 1/32" groove then maple trimmed and glued in.
then leveled and sanded. here are some pics:
Very nice, dogbite!
