Check out this book, called Learn to Play Guitar. Exciting name huh? It's by Barnes and Noble Books, $14 or so. It has a couple dozen of lessons based around popular songs. For example it teaches rhythm playing using a Cranberries song and the next lesson palm muting using a Green Day song. Each lesson picks a few new chords, a different strumming pattern, a little lead work or scales, etc. It doesn't give a lot of theory, but just adds just enough. It doesn't have a cd but most of these songs are/were pretty popular and if you don't already own it, it might still be ringing in your head.
