Hi,
can someone please explain to me why some guitarists use alternate tunings to write songs???
Surely it's not just to make chord fingerings easier...

I think it might be just that, and that it gives you, I think, a meatier sound on some chords and makes some memorable riffs possible (think Honky Tonk Women or Happy, for example). And sometimes it let you have a lower bottom (drop D for example). It's all a matter of getting a different sound. And Blues players often use alternate tunings for slide playing. Having that open chord in the tuning makes some slide work possible.
