I know my tubes start to take on a distinctive smell when they are cranked, so I am wondering if this is normal or what. I think it smells great and it just puts me right in the mood when they start. Do different types of tubes have different smells? Has this happened to you?

The meaning of life? I've never heard a simpler question! Music.

yeah, my tubes has a nice smell for the first 6months or so.

I've been imitated so well I've heard people copy my mistakes.

It's stuff on the outside of the tubes getting hot. They come with some ink on them, get finger oils and perspiration on them with handling, and probably the glue and plastic on the bases of tubes like 6L6s and EL34s put out some smells. They get dust and stuff on them that smells with heat, and the heat makes other stuff in the amp smell. I agree, I like the smell when they heat up. Just as long as I don't smell smoke.
