If you have a web page, with an image on it, that you want to save, put the cursor over the image and right-click. You'll then get something like "save image as", select that and save the image.
Using the screen scrape technique will work, but it then ties you to the size and resolution of the screen.
It is very easy, in html, to have a high-res image (say, 1024 x 768 at 600dpi) being rendered onto a screen (which is typically less than 100dpi - closer to 72) at, say, 256 x 192 - saving it (as against screen scraping) will give you the full sized image.
Yes yes, of course, I should have been clear. You only want to do a screen grab if you can't otherwise get the picture.

In the instance of the guitar designer, you can't save the image normally because it's in a flash object, in the other instance I mentioned, some sites (especially certain art sites) actually disable right clicking on objects so that you can't save the images (and thereby "steal" their work) take for example http://www.jackiebutlerphotography.com

I wanted to pull one of the images from her site (where she happened to actually capture my friends in a band shot) and found this to be the only way I could get the image.

If you ever have the opportunity, Greybeard is right: Right-click, save as. It's faster, easier, and the picture is as a quality as is possible.
does it accept bitmap images?
Possibly, but you almost never want to use bitmap images on the web, as they are huge.

For a quick example, I scribbled an 800 x 600 image in paint:

Bitmap: 1.37 megabytes
jpeg: 43.8 kilobytes
gif: 13.2 kilobytes

That's right: The gif is about 1/100th the size of the bitmap. There's some loss of color information there, but it's really not noticible, and for the size tradeoff, it's very acceptable. 8)

So kids, the moral of the story is: don't display it as a bitmap, or your friends and relatives on dial-up will come to your house and kill you with forks. And when they're done, they're image still won't have fully loaded.

Do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life...

undercat,

the jackiebutler site isn't protected, other than by copyright. You get a pop-up (simple javascript) telling you that the work is copyright, but you can still save the images.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

Yes...on some sites they disable right clicking in Internet Explorer. BUT....not in FIREFOX. I just tried the above site and right clicking works fine in Firefox.

Firefox is a great browser and is much safer to use than IE.

BTW...that Jackiebutler site is GREAT, Undercat. Thanks for mentioning it.

I keep posting this, and nobody is using it.

http://www.hooverae.com/upload/uploader.php

This is my site, my server...completely free, no popups, no separate web page to link to if you want to show a full image. It "just works."

Upload your file, copy the link it spits back at you, and enjoy totally free image hosting with no extra crap to deal with. :D
