This is a great deal if you don't mind ebay. This is what I have in my personal setup right now. I think I paid $120 used for mine. Most of the preset's suck, but you can tweak just about every aspect of every sound. You can get some great sounds out of this little box. The one on ebay doesn't have the power adapter, but if you can get it for less than $100, it's still more than worth it in my opinion.

You can check out MF here on there Amps, Mini/Headphone page.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=guitar/s=amps/search?c=6261

They have all kinds of personal guitar amps that just plug into and use headphones.

I had a little Danelectro one and if you have a Guitar Center nearby they always have them out on special. You could also checkout this guy here http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=guitar/s=effects/search/detail/base_pid/151875/

If you are looking for something with a little more flexibility I would highly recomend the DigiTech RP series. I had the RP200 until I upgraded and got the GNX4. You can get an RP50 for about $60 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=guitar/s=effects/search/detail/base_pid/150830/
and use it with headphones and then when you have an amp you can use it for your multi effect box.

I have a V-amp2 and it is great. Simple to use, great tones, and a great price.

I've got the Danelectro Headphone amp in surf green. It only runs about $20 usd at Guitar Center. I'd highly recommend it.

Again...what is wrong with PODs? have 2.0 and XT...couldn't live without them....V-amp do not like that one.

Maybe you're thinking of some of the little Zoom gadgets? Or maybe something like the Korg Pandora? They're pretty cool...

but if you want something that you can use with headphones or without when you want to be heard...check out a Roland Micro Cube...I love this little amp

Most any of the multi-effect pedals or modeling pedals will have a line out or headphone out that can be connected to a computer or a mixer. With so many on the market it would be a personal choice. Reason is that one that may sound or play right for me, may not sound and play the same for you.

The V-amp and V-amp2 have their supporters....I think it's a cheap version of the PODs...why if you have already said you don't like Line6 PODs would you consider this? I'm confused..anyways good luck to ya!
