Well, here I am 364 days into picking up the guitar at the age of 47. Self taught with a LOT of help and encouragement from the fine folks at this site.

Not sure where I thought I would be a year ago with my guitar playing. I set out to learn to play the instrument I always wanted to well enough to entertain myself and family and friends.

I'm at the point where I can play a dozen or so songs pretty proficiently off the cuff. Another half dozen are in the works. I can strum various patterns pretty well, bass-strum style coming along real well, fingerpicking simple patterns. I would like to improve all my techniques and overcome my jitters when playing for others.

I know I have picked up a pastime that will last the rest of my life. There are not many things that I enjoy in life more than picking up the guitar.

SO, many many thanks to the great people who run this site. And may more to the people who have so patiently answered the newbie questions they must have seen a thousand times or more. Or provided encouragement even if it was “just keep at ‘er, it will come”

THANKS FELLOW GUITAR PLAYERS!!!!!

Congratulations.

And thanks for answering one of the questions that's rolling around in the back of my head.
That being"how much does someone know about playing after a year"?
I realize that it's variable, but it's nice to have a datapoint or 2 .
I'll let y'all know where I'm at in another 9 months...

I wrapped a newspaper ’round my head
So I looked like I was deep

Hay Dave T,

Congrats...

Just wondering what are some of the songs you can get all the way through just to give other newbies encouragement?

Cheers

Keith

I know a little bit about a lot of things, but not a lot about anything...
Looking for people to jam with in Sydney Oz.......

Congratulations mate!

'Tis great you've got over a dozen songs you can play all the way through. That's a great achievement. I'm certainly nowhere near that. :)

Strum Style

The Times They Are A Changing
Blowing in the Wind
Hey Jude
The One I Love
Last Kiss
Candle in the Wind
Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam
Molly's Lips
Horse With No Name, For What It's Worth, Feelin Alright (D Hodge Versions)

Bass Strum Style

Mr Tambourine Man
Me and Bobby McGee
Love Is All Around

Fingerstyle

Scarborough Fair
Knockin On Heaven's Door

Note these are “easy” versions, all open chords, some chord substitutions ie: B7 for B, etc. I'm not much for learning riffs or soloing.

What I find real cool is to go back to a song I first learned and play it with some more complex strumming or patterns.
