I'm trying out the solo of Comfortably Numb. For this you need to play the 14th fret on adjacent strings one after the other in the first few measure. A barre will not work for this. I think I have it worked out but i was wondering how anyone else plays this song.

There are really only three ways to achieve it smoothly:

1. A barre (which, as you noted, won't work for some phrases)

2. Using two different fingers, like 2 & 3

3. By rolling/collapsing your finger. If the first note is lower, you collapse the finger to hit the next string; if the first note is higher, you fret it with the 'flat' of your finger, and then roll the finger to hit the lower string with the tip.

Thank you.
I'm beginning to think that David Gilmour is a genius at bends. I don't know how he makes this solo sound so great.

It's nothing to thing bout, he is! He has the best vibrato and bending skills I have heard. I especially like his solos in Comfortably Numb and Time.
