I have a Fender super reverb re-issue which is only 3 years old.
I hadn't played it for almost a month and now it sounds very
muddy and weird sounding! My local guitar shop said it probably
needs re-tubed so while I'm replacing tube anyway...

Does anyone know whether you can upgrade the stock tubes?
I'd like to get an eariler break when digging in and a sweeter tone.

Thanks!

I'm surprised that the tubes should need replacing, because the amp stood around for a month. Where has the amp stood? Could it be that is has been standing in a damp atmosphere? If so, you may find that the cones of the speakers have become damp and just need drying out.

Tubes don't normally die through lack of use - it's capacitors that do that (but we're talking years, rather than months).

However, if it truly is the tubes, you can upgrade to JJ's, which should sharpen up the tone.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

Thanks for the reply...
It was sitting in the house in a dry warm place so it's probably
not the cones. When I called the local amp repair shop they
didn't seem surprised that it could be the tubes after a couple
of years.

When you say JJs will "sharpen" the tone what kind of tone do
they give? I'm looking for a smoother, less harsh tone.

Thanks again!
