Anyone play a hollowbody? I probably have too much time on my hands but I've been thinking about one. :D

I have a semi-hollowbody and I love the tones I get with it. But, it's not a true hollowbody, so I guess this doesn't help much does it? LOL!

If replies by those of us who have a semi-hollow are even "half" helpful  , I'll chime in: I found an Ibanez (Artcore) TM-71 Talman last year, and it's as good as the user reviews said. Great guitar for the price. As EB said, "love the tones."

Yeah, I've got a full hollowbody Ibanez AF75. What do you want to know about it?

wondering which are nice ones, meaning good sounding, what type of music sounds best on them, etc.

i have a guitar now that has two double humbuckers and is beautiful sounding. no problem with it. but i like to fingerpick and am wondering if a hollowbody might lend itself to that style better.

An acoustic-electric might be a better fingerstyle choice than a "traditional" hollowbody electric for both feel and tone. There are also some "non-traditional" hollow electrics that might also fit the bill. Check out the Carvin catalog (AC, AE and CC lines), Godins and the Taylor T-5 for examples of these.

I have a T-5. It works very well for both fingerstyle and straight-ahead picking. Plus I can play just about any style of music on it -- or rather try to play any style, from "electric" to passibly acoustic. Definitely the most versatile guitar I own.

I can only add, try one ;)
The only real way you'd know if you like them.
And they can be used in most forms of music, from Jazz (George Benson), blues (John Lee Hooker, BB King - not a true hollow though), Rock and Roll (Scotty Moore, Chuck Berry), Country, HeavyBluesy Rock (Malcolm Young, CCR, Clapton (with Cream)), Other (Oasis, Smiths) and of course The Beatles (Used Epiphone Casinos a lot). Just about the only style I haven't seen it used for is really heavy thrashspeeddeath metal, but I'm sure someone will know of one.

Check out the Ibanez Artcore guitars. Nice quality guitars, and not too expensive.

Like Arjen, I have an AF75 and I LOVE it. Rich warm clean tones but it can get downright dirty sounding when you want it to.

Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.

What tele said. I was pretty surprised to find out I could apply a fair bit of gain without getting feedback. Basic rock and blues tones are easy to dial in but it excels in even milder tones, either super clean or smooth bluesy. It plays very nicely and the finish on all AF/AK series seem to be superb.

The Artcores are great, but I wouldn't judge their timbres as particularly conducive to fingerstyle -- not any more than any other "similar" hollow or semi-hollow electric ... or even solids. Though hollow, they still lack that flat top acoustic definition that benefits fingerpicking. What they tend to have is more low to midrange (warmer) tones than most solids. Fingerpicking often benefits from some high-end "zing" to help create definition in the notes. Most hollow and semi-hollow electrics have less of this than something like a Telecaster -- which is often used for electric country fingerstyle. Twelve string electrics create a similar high end through the octave strings. And that also seems to work well for fingerpicking. The six-string models I listed above should in some settings have electric tones that can approach those of an acoustic flat top.

But that's what I would look for. I guess the real question is "For what styles and tones?"

A T-5 is definitely different than almost any other guitar. Without really knowing what you need, I'm 90% sure you would love it. But it's also nearly two grand at the lower end. You can get a lot of Artcores for that.

I play with nothing but my fingers, never touch a pick and the AF75's work great for fingerpicking

As do I about 50% of the time. And you also do this on your Tele, correct? Every guitar I own works for fingerstyle, but they do sound very different. So at the moment, there is nothing to particularly distinguish any guitar for Pearl's purposes until we know what she is looking for.
