put your EQ at the end of your pedal train. add a chorus pedal too.
when I run effects my signal going in is full on. meaning from my guitar to my first pedal my guitar is turned all the way up. (I control my overall output with a volume pedal towards the end of my pedal train.)

I dont have distortion or gain controls on my amp. I use pedals for that. I have a modified Tubescreamer.

but definately put the EQ at the end. that way you can shape the tones clean and distorted.

Ok...I'm still not getting it. I've tried different settings w/ overdrive and w/o. With the peddles and without them. The soundclips seem to have the same sound.

I dont know, but this tone thing takes so long that "if" I ever get it down I'm going to take notes and pictures on it...ahhhh!

Can anyone else replicate that noise?..I seem to be getting the same tone all the time that changes very slightly...I might need to crank my amp master past "2". Any good dummyloaders for sale?

I may be wrong here. what I hear in the sound clips sounds similar to Van Halen's sound.
I think it is called the brown sound. dont ask me why. I have read endless posts on other forums re: Van Halen and that tone.

I dont know what he used for an overdrive. he did use a Phaser.
a while back I had an interestingexperience. maybe this will shed light on what you are looking for.

I had a Tubescreamer overdrive pedal. then I read about the modifications a guy called Analogmike makes. he changes the insides nd alters the original function to improve the output.
I had him do my pedal. when it came back I hated it. it had a tight grainy overdrive that did not suit my tastes intone.
we had a nice talk. he understood that my sound taste was that tube amp warm loose overdrive. he called it flabby. anyway, hhe remodded the pedal to my taste. it is killer now.

many many players love that tight grainy overdrive. (my description). others dont call it grainy, but tight may work.
that sound is defined by Vabn Halens tone.

so perhaps you are looking for that tighter tone. add a Phaser and you should get really close to what you are hearing.

I dont know how the effects work on your amp. perhaps that distortion function on your amp isnt the right one for what you want to achieve.
would you be opposed to getting a stompbox.? something that would get you closer to that brown sound...as defined by Eddie Van Halen.

I know how frustrating getting the right sound can be. it has taken me years to get my tone.

keep at it. pay attention and take notes. and be open to some of the tones you are finding; they copuld be useful later on.

good luck.

Thanks for the information. I'm going to keep trying, it might be the cables?

I'm not even getting the tones that are in the demo for the GE 7 Peddle I have http://www.bosscorp.co.jp/demos/en/GE-7_sound/demo.html . I seem to just be getting distortion. Oh well, I'll figure it out some day - Back to acoustic :)

dont quit yet dude.

I have the same EQ pedal as you. it's a great thing. Ileave my mids near the middle.meaning I dont scoop them. having a bit of middle level helps round out the sound.

you do know that EQ will not give you distortion.

your cables probably are not impeding your sound. I have to think it is the distortion end that you a missing.

what kind of amp do you have again? is there a web site that posts info. maybe I can figure it out.

but dont quit.

This is the tab to the rock song, in case anyone wanted to play it. I'm going to go through my sd 1 peddle and try more distortion. I have a hot rod deluxe. I've checked out the unofficial page.

I used to have an sd 1 pedal. if I am correct it is a pretty mild distortion stompbox.
ou amp, very nice too, should get you close.
I still think that a Phaser will help.
you seem focused on the kind of distortion. that's ok, but there is other stuff in that sound clip.

glad you are not giving up.
