Recently I purchased a Fender Jaguar Baritone, basically a 6-string tuned down an octave. It's got a 28.5" scale and standard string spacing (1 3/8" & 2" - specs available on the Fender site). With these dimensions, guitar players can pretty much start playing bass lines with it right out of the box.

The thing defies everything I thought I knew about guitar construction. There's no problem with intonation, the sustain is great and the strings don't slap into each other. Sounds great too.

Good for the home studio but if you ever show it to your bass player, beware of political fallout. (You will notice that I posted this in the guitar player's forum...)

It also accepts regular bass strings with the larger ball on the end (a little ugly but it works) so you can experiment with other guages & brands.

You could probably also string it with 'standard' baritone strings (B-B) but that would require some adjustments.
