when i play i can't seem to get into beat unless i use a metronome. i cant seem to get the right note values without it, and i cant keep a steady beat. how am i supposed to memorize the beat in my head or something wihtout using one or tapping my foot or something. any suggestions?

As it happens, tapping your foot is a very effective way of keeping time.
Being able to keep time without a metronome does burn its way into your brain - it's another one of those things that really does become easier with practice. Try counting 1-2-3-4 in time with your footsteps as you walk to the bus stop, or shops, or the guitar shop. Then try 1-2-3, and so on.
