If you want to play music, then learning theory can only help.

You don't have to learn everything all in one go. Get a good book and learn at your own pace. Just don't get so bogged down that you lose interest in playing.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

I'll second that - nobody ever got kicked out of a band cos they understood music theory.

You really shouldn't do anything, but if you're asking the question I guess you already are somewhat interested in it. Just get a a good book or some of the on-site theory lessons and see if you like it. Can't hurt anyway.
